Last Wednesday on 12th January, 2011 Lebanese govern fell to forebodings of impending crises while its prime minister, Mr. Saad Hariri, was visiting the White House. Governments in Lebanon cannot survive without Hezbollah's support. No stronger signals could be sent to the US showing the displeasure of substantial segments of Lebanese society over the US meddling in Lebanon.
The international media reported President Obama blasting Hezbollahfor causing the government collapse and in a statement the White House slammed Hezbollah for not allowing the government ‘to conduct its business and advance the aspirations of the Lebanese people.’’

Hezbollah Unhappy Over UN-backed Special Tribunal of Lebanon (STL)
Hezbollah is not happy with the UN-backed Special Tribunal of Lebanon (STL), which is investigating 2005 assassination of former Lebanese prime minister, Rafik Hariri, father of current prime minister of Lebanon, Saad Hariri, whose government has just fallen.
Eleven cabinet ministers, more than one third of the cabinet required to bring down the government, belonging to Hezbollah and its allies resigned last Wednesday and the very next day Lebanon’s President, Michel Suleiman, asked the outgoing cabinet to continue in office in a caretaker capacity until the new one was formed.
Lebanon Becomes Battleground of Competing Interests
Lebanon has become a battle ground of competing interests of international forces headed by the US. They are exerting and employing all means to neutralize Iran-Syrian influence in Lebanon by marginalizing Hezbollah in Lebanon.
This has been evident in the US policies on Lebanon. Completely ignoring all other UN resolutions on Middle East issue the US had been orchestrating support for UN resolution 1559 because it entailed immediate gains for Israel and the US in the region. The resolution demanded Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon as well as disbanding of Hezbollah which even today is the prime wish of Israel.
Cashing in on a sympathy wave on the unjustified murder of Rafiq Hariri, the US tried to neutralize Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Now as Syria is out of Lebanon and has lost all leverage on Israel to reach any settlement on Golan Heights, it seems the Heights will remain under Israeli occupation until time unknown. The US is not doing anything to resolve the issue which has the potential of greater conflagration.
The US Narrow Vision on Lebanon
To realize its own petty gains the US thrust Lebanon and the whole region into a quagmire of mutual distrust, incrimination and infighting. Lebanon, however, has come of age. Disregarding all outside interventions it chose its Prime Minister afresh and the gigantic processions on the streets of Lebanon in support of Syria at the time it left Lebanon negated all propaganda that had made Syrian army look like an occupation force in Lebanon. People in the millions thanked Syria for the invaluable sacrifices and contribution it had made to bring peace, security and stability to Lebanon.
Hezbollah: A Legitimate Political Force
Although the US and its allies don't agree with this assertion, the fact remains that Hezbollah is a legitimate political force in Lebanon with 16 members of parliament and Iran’s support to such an organization cannot be branded as support to terrorism. Hezbollah is a nationalist party with religious moorings and is determined to do whatever is humanly possible to defend their country against hegemonic designs of Israel.
There is nothing wrong in doing so as long as they don’t act beyond their borders as Israel and the US do in the name of peace and democracy. Who can deny the fact that Israel has been involved in targeted killings abroad of its so called enemies? The US war hawks, being its chief patrons, have no qualm of conscience in supporting such activities or looking the other way.
